The roar of an engine, the thrill of ascent, and the freedom of the open sky—these are the sensations that ignite the passion of students like Harper Cash ‘26, Luqman Siddiqui ‘26, and Jacob Perkins ‘25. For them, aviation is more than just a hobby; its chance to see the world from a whole new perspective.
Greenhills aims to foster this passion through its flying club, led by Perkins. “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been fascinated by flying,” said Perkins. The flying club give members the ability share that interest with other students
“In my sophomore year, I went flying with a family friend who owns a plane and it really sparked my curiosity. I then went on later to do it a couple times with the school, that’s what really cemented my interest in flying,” said Perkins.
Joining the flying club in his freshman year solidified his interest, providing opportunities to learn from experienced pilots and fellow students.
The club isn’t just for those actively pursuing flight training. “The flying club here at Greenhills is one of the things that really started my interest in aviation,” said Jacob Handelsman ‘27 “It’s a cool opportunity that I haven’t seen before at other schools”. The club provides a space for students like Handelsman to explore their curiosity about aviation, offering educational programs, games and even some actual flying times for members.
This experience ignited his passion for aviation, leading him to join the flying club and pursue further flight training.
For those pursuing flight training, the journey is both exhilarating and challenging. Cash echoes a sentiment shared by many first-time flyers: “My first time flying was intimidating but fun,”said Cash. “It’s a very hands-on process, you’re given the controls and off you go”
Siddiqui, another student pilot, shares a similar experience. “I was never really into flying until I actually got to go on a test flight with a trained professional,” said Siddiqui ‘26. The experience not only changed his perspective but sparked his interest in a potential aviation career. “My first flight was incredibly therapeutic, and flying itself was surprisingly easy – as long as you keep a steady altitude.” said Siddiqui
For all the students involved, the allure of flight lies not just in the technical aspects but also in the unique perspective it offers. “The best part of flying is the view from the cockpit,” said Siddiqui. Perkins describes the unparalleled experience of flying a small plane: “It’s a completely different experience flying by yourself compared to a commercial plane. You’re so much closer to the ground, you get an incredible view”
Cash highlights how flying goes beyond transportation, becoming a means of exploration: “I love to travel, and flying is a great way to experience a new place with total control,” said Cash. “The ability to navigate and be in command offers a sense of freedom and empowerment that few experiences can match.”
“Greenhills, with its supportive environment and dedicated flying club, provides a launchpad for students to explore the world of aviation,” said Perkins. As they take flight, they not only learn to navigate the skies but also discover a passion that can shape their future.
The aviation club also plays a vital role in inspiring younger students and new freshmen. By organizing workshops, demonstrations, and games they introduce aviation to a new generation, with hopes of sparking curiosity and igniting dreams. This commitment to fostering the next generation of aviators ensures that the legacy of aviation at Greenhills will continue to soar.
